He Gave Up Courtside Lakers Tickets to Meet Her. LeBron Wasn’t Even Playing

Sabby and Kanver met on a dating app, and technically, it started because of a misunderstanding.

Kanver’s location showed Edmonton, which is why Sabby swiped right. What she didn’t know was that he was actually from Toronto and only in Edmonton visiting family. By the next day, he was already back home.

Still, the conversation kept going. Texts turned into FaceTimes, and within a month, Kanver flew back to Edmonton to see her.

He likes to tell people he gave up courtside Lakers tickets for the trip. “I always tell people I chose to meet my future wife over seeing LeBron.”

There was just one small problem with that story.

“I later found out that LeBron wasn’t even playing that game,” Sabby laughs.

The distance never really slowed them down. Sabby was drawn to Kanver’s determination and the way he commits fully to whatever he wants. For Kanver, it was Sabby’s drive, ambition and caring nature, plus, as he would probably add, the food she makes for him.

When it came time to propose, Kanver recruited Sabby’s sister-in-law, a photographer, to help with the surprise. The plan was disguised as a birthday photoshoot in Downtown Edmonton.

In March.

At roughly -20°C.

During the shoot, Sabby was asked to turn around and found Kanver down on one knee. “It was so cold that I didn’t even let him finish his speech,” she recalls.

One of Sabby’s favourite parts of wedding planning was watching how excited her parents became. “They live through their kids because they never had the chance to plan their own weddings,” she explains.

The wedding week included separate mehndi, jago and maiyan/choora events before the wedding and reception. One moment stood out immediately: Sabby crashing Kanver’s jago on a Harley.

Their advice now is simple: “Enjoy every single moment with your family and friends, and don’t stress about things that don’t go your way.”

What started with an Edmonton location tag that wasn’t quite accurate turned into FaceTimes, flights across the country, a very cold proposal and, eventually, a wedding.

And somewhere along the way, Kanver got a much better story than the Lakers game.
