After a Cancelled Hot Air Balloon Ride, This Couple Got Engaged in Squamish and Married in Cabo

Davneet and Pawan met after high school, and music was the first thing that made them click.

“I remember sending songs back and forth and that was our love language at that time,” Davneet recalls.

Ten years later, the dynamic between them is still pretty much the same.

Pawan is the introvert. Davneet is the extrovert.

“Together we're the perfect balance. I keep him wild, he keeps me sane.”

Their proposal story, however, was slightly less balanced.

Pawan had planned to propose during a hot air balloon ride in Scottsdale, Arizona.

There was just one problem. Davneet hates hot air balloons.

“Our proposal story is a bit funny. We were in Scottsdale, Arizona and Pawan told me that we had to sleep on time one night because we’re doing something fun in the morning... EARLY in the morning. He wanted me to wake up at 5 AM and be ready to go by 6 AM and all I could think was WHY?! If anyone knows me, they know I hate surprises, so I managed to get it out of him and I just knew there was a proposal coming the next morning... what I didn’t know was that it was happening on a hot air balloon and oh man... another thing about me, I HATE Hot Air Balloons. I’m so afraid- but leave it to my genius older cousin to give Pawan that idea and let him run with it. As I woke up the next morning about to get out of bed, dreading the anxiety of thinking of going on a hot air balloon... the place called Pawan and CANCELLED! It was meant to be. And best of all, I found out later that my actual engagement ring wasn’t done yet so he was going to propose with a similar ring ‘a borrowed ring’, which would’ve been totally fine, but at that moment I would rather have the proposal be something that wouldn’t cause me anxiety.”

So, perhaps unsurprisingly, the cancelled balloon ride worked out for the best.

The real proposal came later in Squamish, BC, overlooking the ocean and mountains with some of their closest friends nearby. Much more Davneet.

After a decade together, they also knew exactly what they wanted from the wedding itself: fewer people, more time together.

“The older we got, the more we realized we just wanted to get married with our nearest and dearest by our sides, which is why we opted for a destination wedding, and what better place to get married at than with the ocean and palm trees near you? Hello CABO!” Davneet shares.

They chose Hard Rock Cabo and spent about a year planning the wedding.

“We heard amazing things about Hard Rock Resort in Cabo, and it truly did not disappoint. It was the best decision we made. It took us a good year to plan our wedding. The biggest challenge is of course planning a destination wedding, especially now that there is so much controversy around it. We're so happy we had a smooth planning process with both the hotel and our vendors.”

But some of Davneet’s favourite memories happened before they ever arrived in Mexico.

“Our favorite part of the planning process was probably how each planning day would turn into our families being together and celebrating the process with us. When I say champagne was popped for every occasion, I mean it! The day I got my wedding dress, pop the champagne, the day I went for my fittings, pop the champagne! We had so much fun with the planning.”

What They Wore

That energy carried into Cabo. Rather than spending the week split between separate events, Davneet and Pawan wanted to experience the celebrations together.

“Having every single event together, was the absolute best. We both got to enjoy each event together with the people we love. AND because we had an intimate wedding, we were able to conversate with each guest which was amazing.”

A smaller guest list meant they could actually spend time with the people who had travelled to celebrate with them instead of watching the week disappear around them.

And after ten years together, Davneet’s advice is fittingly simple.

“Take it all in. It's true when they say it goes by in the blink of an eye, so my advice is to take it all in and enjoy every moment, even the process. One day you're a daughter in your home, the next you're someone's wife starting a new chapter. I would say don't sweat the small stuff in the process too, at the end all you remember is the people who were next to you in the most magical week of your life”

For Davneet and Pawan, that week happened in Cabo.

But getting there involved ten years, a lot of shared music, plenty of champagne and one very fortunate cancelled hot air balloon ride.
