Swiped Right for a Forever After
The Wedding Story of Sabby Sekhon and Kanver Gill
Wedding Date: August 19, 2023
Location: Edmonton, AB
Guest Number: 230
Bride: Sabby Sekhon
Groom: Kanver Gill
Sabby and Kanver’s love story began in a modern way—through a dating app. Sabby swiped right after seeing Kanver’s location listed as Edmonton, AB. “That’s why I swiped right,” Sabby shares. But fate had a twist—Kanver, originally from Toronto, was actually in Edmonton visiting family, and by the next day, he was already back in his hometown.
Despite the distance, they quickly bonded over texts and FaceTime. “We hit it off pretty quickly,” Sabby remembers. Within a month, Kanver flew back to Edmonton to see her again. He likes to joke that he gave up court-side Lakers tickets to meet Sabby, saying, “I always tell people I chose to meet my future wife over seeing LeBron.” The twist? “I later found out that LeBron wasn’t even playing that game,” Sabby laughs.
What Sabby loves most about Kanver is his determination. “When he sets his mind on something, he pushes himself very hard to achieve that goal.” For Kanver, what he appreciates most about Sabby is her drive, ambition, and caring nature—and, of course, the variety of food she makes for him.
When it came to the proposal, Kanver planned a memorable moment that would surprise Sabby. With the help of Sabby’s sister-in-law, a photographer, Kanver set up a birthday photoshoot for Sabby in Downtown Edmonton. Despite the harsh March weather—around -20°C—Sabby went along with the shoot without suspecting anything. During the session, her sister-in-law asked her to turn around, and there was Kanver, down on one knee.
“It was so cold that I didn’t even let him finish his speech,” Sabby recalls.
The wedding planning followed, and while it took seven months to organize, the process had its challenges. With Kanver in Toronto and Sabby in Edmonton, coordinating everything wasn’t easy. “Finding my outfit was quick, thanks to my brother and sister-in-law, but managing vendor availability for makeup and hair was tough. I didn’t realize how far in advance you needed to book them—almost two years!” Sabby says. Convincing Kanver about certain colors for the wedding was another hurdle.
One standout vendor was Jeevan from Jay Luxe Photography. “When we first met Jeevan, it felt like an instant connection—like we’d known her forever!” Sabby recalls. “She was very transparent about her process and how she worked with the bride and groom to capture their day. She listened to what we wanted and reviewed our mood boards.”
Jeevan went above and beyond by not only capturing beautiful moments but also assisting Sabby by fixing her lengha during the Anand Karaj and helping her into her second outfit at the reception.
Despite the obstacles, Sabby’s favorite part of the planning was seeing her parents’ excitement. “They live through their kids because they never had the chance to plan their own weddings,” she explains.
The wedding festivities included separate pre-wedding events—mehndi, jago, maiyan/choora—leading up to the wedding and reception. Sabby’s favorite moment was crashing Kanver’s jago on a Harley, a spontaneous and unforgettable highlight of the celebrations.
As for advice, the couple offers this: “Enjoy every single moment with your family and friends, and don’t stress about things that don’t go your way.”
What started with a swipe right on a dating app turned into a strong connection that overcame distance and time. Their relationship, marked by their bond over the phone and Kanver's humorous decision to give up Lakers tickets, laid the foundation for a lifetime together.
